Drum Lamp Shades

One of the most popular and eye catching lamp shades is the fabric drum shade.  Drum lamp shades have straight vertical sides and are typically much wider than a cylinder lamp shade. When paired with the right base and the proper proportions, a drum shade has an appealing effect on the overall look of your room. Nowadays drum shapes are found on most floor lamps and are particularly good for spreading a maximum amount of light compared to shades of other shapes. The hotels and restaurants have done a 180 degree shift when it comes to updating their look. The design focus has changed because of the following: a younger audience, a demand for the W Hotel look (that was ahead of most hotels at the time) as well as much younger designers now doing the specifying for the Hospitality industry. Hotels and restaurants can’t afford to take a back seat to their competition when it comes to renovating their facilities. Even with this slow economy, SL has managed to grow in popularity and product development exploration. We view this down time as a vehicle in which to pass our competition with new and unique lighting ideas.

Then they figure what design they would like on that canvas. We have the capability to design custom printed fabric light fixtures which we do on-site here at our California lighting studio. Creating a custom lamp shade… From the ordering process to the UPS person picking it up and delivering it to the customer’s door, Seascape Lamps stands alone when it comes to service, quality and high design. This somewhat speeded-up humorous video shows the step by step process of how we make our contemporary drum pendant lighting fixtures. We emphasize to our customers that you’re not just buying a light, you’re getting a decorative lighting fixture that is a piece of functional art. This print that you’re seeing in the video was designed by Thomaspaul, who licensed us exclusively to print his designs for our table lamps and pendant lighting fixtures.

The first step is talking with our clients to find out exactly what they need to light their room, while at the same time making sure that they get the right colors and size to complement their space. Often we’ll get requests to send out a swatch sample to make sure a particular choice works in a room. Our Graphics department at Seascape has spent years perfecting the specific printing process on these lamp shades, for floor lamps, table lamps, and ceiling lighting.

After the image for our client is printed, it is then taken to production where the print is trimmed and formed on a special type of machine which has been in use for over 65 years. The art of making individualized, custom-made fabric lamp shades within the U.S. is a dying art. Unfortunately many U.S. companies now sell quickly-made mass-produced lamps from abroad.

After the lamp shade is formed, it is then seamed and brought to the wiring specialist where it is wired and tested for any defects. We then bring it to the shipping department where it is carefully double-boxed for added protection. We want to ensure that our clients get our product in the same condition it was when it left our studio.

I know it looks fast and easy, but much time and care go into each one of our light fixture creations; it is much more difficult then meets the eye. From the designing process to the custom craftsman assembly to the shipping of each drum light fixture, it is an expensive and timely process. By simply replacing your lamp shades on your lamp, you can bring a whole new life to that room in your house or office, and at the same time save some money. A lot of our customers like to go to antique stores and flea markets and buy old retro lamps. Unfortunately, more times than not, the base can be cleaned up and made to look like new while the shade is either worn and torn or just isn’t quite what you had in mind for your new cool find. Much of the time the lamp base is in vogue while somehow the shade just doesn’t seem right for the base.

First off you need to decide what size shade you will need, and one thing you must realize is that by buying and changing your harp – which is the part that your lamp sits on – you can alter the height of where the shade will rest on the base. Most lighting stores and hardware stores carry harps. If you know the size you need we carry many sizes of harps and would be glad to supply you one for free with the purchase of one of our lamp shades. What you want is for the shade to sit right below the light socket some where around mid point of the neck of the lamp.

Next, you must determine the size shade you will need, either by going by the size of the old one, or by using another lamp shade in your house that you can try on it. Most people these days like to use drum lamp shades, which Seascape uses quite a bit on most all of our designer table lamps. If this is the case, figure out the height and the diameter that you will need. Because we make all our lamp shades in-house we are able to make many different diameters and almost any height you want.
